  11. How does it work ?
  12. The user points his browser to the page he wants to modify, delete or replace. PageBuddy gets hold of the window
  13. title and url, and presents the surfer (through a common interface) a simple way to tell the webmaster what
  14. exactly he want's to be done. The data gathered throughout the process is presented for verification, and then
  15. sent by eMail to the webmaster. PageBuddy relies on AppleScript™ and certain circumstances described under
  16. the "requirements" section.

  20. What's the purpose for PageBuddy™ ?
  21. PageBuddy assists the user in filing a webpage modification request to the webmaster. The use of PageBuddy
  22. ensures that all the relevant information is sent at once, so the responsible webmaster doesn't need so much
  23. Prozac when trying to decipher modification request...

  25. Sit back, relax and imagine... you have finalized your last homepage project, ftp'd the whole site to the web
  26. server, flushed the cache and re-checked everything in at least twelve browser flavours. Everything looks
  27. fine. Feels good, eh ? Now what happens two weeks later ? You'll be buried with phone calls, emails, snail mail,
  28. stickies etc... please change the last two numbers on my page 7 to 23, thanks. Huh ? What ? Which site,
  29. page, line ? Hi - theres a dead link, the one that's blue you know. Which page ? Oh, the one with the nice
  30. picture there ! Good evening, could you replace the old page, ohnowindo.html, with the document on the server ?

  33. Enough, you have yourself hundreds of this stories ready, don't you ? Now PageBuddy will clean up (some of)
  34. this weirdness. At least, that was my intention when I begann developping PageBuddy. It's purpose is to make
  35. my life as a webmaster of a short dozen sites a bit easier. It let's all Mac folks use a browser to watch "their"
  36. homepages and send me standardized modification requests.

  40. Who may benefit from the use of PageBuddy ?
  41. Well, me ! That's why i did it, you remember ! I don't know how well PageBuddy could fit the desires of other
  42. webmasters, since the 1.0 version will be developped only for my own, special purposes. But with further
  43. developpement, if i do so [1], PageBuddy will be universalized, so it should be a helper application to many
  44. other poor ol' webhamsters ;-)

  46. [1] : i would say, the existence of a readme file is a good sign that there may be further developpment...

  50. Is it worth the money ?
  51. Yes. The version 1.0 is free. That's a good price for so sparely strayed bugs. It's free because i would have
  52. done it anyway (I'm a bit sulfuric, for the insiders). Anyone who registers the free version will be
  53. redirected to an upgrade link with the latest bugfixes to version 1.0.

  55. Later releases may be based on the shareware idea. Presumably in the range of $5-10 per licence, depending on 
  56. how much time I invest in developping user requested features that i personally don't care about. I will never 
  57. charge for developpment made for my own purposes.  This should be a helper app, not a M$ software.

  66. Requirements
  67. It's developped on a G3/266/320MB/8GB, System 8.5(f7) and Andrew Barry's RealBasic (R2D27).
  68. In version 1.0 it works only with Netscape and requires AppleScript to be installed . Should
  69. run on System 7.5 and up. Maybe Sys8.0/8.1 won't display the windows properly (but it's not
  70. clear why and when). I will add info as i gather from "beta" tests and user reports.

  74. - improved mail interface

  81. How to influence PageBuddy's developpment ?
  82. Easy - register any version of PageBuddy, and i lend you an ear... as i said, this is no commercial
  83. developpement. I will think about your requests and talk back to you to communicate what i think 
  84. is possible (read : meets my skills and time). If you have fun, buy RealBasic and share some
  85. hot code with me. We could initiate a open code project... for the benefit of all webmasters and
  86. against monopoly software that includes fancy features but meets not the needs of the users.

  91. Don't use Microsloth products. (Hence don't ever create readme files in word ! Else you will be
  92. excluded from PageBuddy for the length of your life !)
